Materials will be assigned to each student in the beginning of the year. The student is responsible for covering and caring for the materials. Loss or damage of materials will result in replacement of the materials at the student’s expense.

Materials are not to be left in P21 unless otherwise instructed.

Course Description:


Communicative Objectives:
This course integrates a systemic review of first and second year concepts with the new third year materials. Continued emphasis on communicative skills is stressed. Integration of cultural information pertaining to the designated topics of this course occurs in skill areas where appropriate.

Within the context of the target language and culture, the student will:
Ø Understand more detailed questions.
Ø Give detailed and extended information.
Ø Ask others for detailed information.
Ø Understand extended answers to questions.
Ø Recount, comprehend, and react to a sequence of events that happened personally or to someone else.
Ø Summarize and discuss a movie, TV program, book, magazine/newspaper article, etc. experienced in either the target or native language.
Ø Discuss plans for a future event (picnic, holiday, trip, etc.).
Ø Discuss plans for a career.
Ø Suggest alternatives (send back unacceptable food, change a departure time, etc.) rather than accept the option offered.
Ø Influence or encourage someone to do something (change places on a train, return a purchase, etc).
Ø Seek explanations of the unexpected.
Ø Give instructions for completing a task.
Ø Understand and participate in simple conversations (face to face, telephone, etc.).
Ø Use extended vocabulary to express and share emotions such as hopes, expectations, worries, and fears
Ø Comprehend and use extended vocabulary to react to current events and issues.
Ø Create original narrations.
Ø Draw conclusions.
Ø Influence, encourage and defend decisions.
Ø Discuss issues.
Ø Comprehend the gist of impromptu conversations and inserts personal opinions and information as appropriate
Ø Seek supporting details in authentic materials
Ø Comprehend connected discourse.
Ø Critique literary works appropriate to the level.
Ø Develop organized summaries, compositions, and/or reports of more than one paragraph.
Ø Compose pattern poetry.

Student Expectations and Procedures:
Noncompliance with the following will be reflected in your participation score or disciplinary action.
1. The student is expected to actively participate in class and do his or her best. Have a good attitude!
2. The student is expected to attend class promptly and be dismissed by Sr. Stetson, not by the bell. 55 Minutes of Spanish per day.
3. The student is expected to respect his or her classroom and fellow citizens.
4. The student is expected to bring all necessary materials to class and keep a notebook dedicated to Spanish.
5. Eating or drinking other than water is not allowed in class.

Instructor Expectations:
Students can expect that the instructor will provide the following: An safe environment that is conducive to learning, a healthy mix of written assignments and communicative activities, fair evaluations that test the exact objectives of the given unit, knowledge of the exact grading criteria for any assignment and finally the student can expect that the Sr. Stetson give 100% everyday to facilitate the learning of his students.

WHAT’S MY GRADE?!?!: Each Friday there will be current grades posted. If you have questions about the breakdown of your grade, you can come to p21 during lunch, before school or after school for an individual discussion and a look at your assignment history.

“What will a normal day be like in Sr. Stetson’s class?”
1. Come to class on-time and begin the Tapa. During this time, Sr. Stetson will take attendance and check the homework from the prior night. Sr. Stetson will quickly review the Tapa. This will take 7-10 minutes.
2. After the Tapa the class will engage in activities designed to practice grammar, communication, or other information of the unit.
3. During the last 5-7 minutes of class, Sr. Stetson will assign homework designed to provide further academic support or contribute to the next day’s lesson, and the students will make sure their desks are orderly and clean.
4. Finally students will be dismissed only when Sr. Stetson sees that the classroom is neat and tidy and all students are seated.

Grading Policies:

A: 100‑90
B: 89‑80
C: 79‑70
F: 69‑0

Final Grade Breakdown:

20% Weekly Quizzes: Short quizzes will be given frequently during the instruction of a unit. The quizzes will resemble the unit test and practice the concepts necessary for success in Sr. Stetson’s class.
15% Active Participation: This section of the final grade reflects the student’s class work and academic behavior. 100% in this criterion would be a student that is actively engaged in the assignments and asking relevant academic questions, 0% in this would be a student that blatantly pays no attention, consistently is not engaged in the assignments and shows a general apathy towards learning.
15% ¡Días Sociales! During these Social Days SPANISH WILL ONLY BE SPOKEN. During these days the class will work on Spanish spoken communication in social settings. During the 1st Semester, Días Sociales will be on Thursdays; during the 2nd semester, they will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students will be given a weekly grade out of 10 points for this category. Using English or not participating will result in -2 points per ‘slip-up.’ These days are meant to practice spoken language, no points will be deducted for inaccuracy.
10% Homework: Frequent homework assignments will be given to provide practice on key concepts.
25% Chapter Tests/Chapter Projects: At the end of each chapter students will be tested on their mastery of the subject matter. The test will be written, listening and oral. When pertinent, a chapter project will be given to supplement the chapter test. All projects will have rubrics associated with them to provide objective assessment.
15% Final Exams

Make-up Policy:


1. Consistent daily attendance is essential to learn a foreign language; therefore absences should be avoided when possible. Only for excused absences may you make up work.
2. Missed graded work must be made up within 5 school days after the absence, unless other arrangements are made with me. Any work not made up within this time will receive a "0".
3. To turn in late work, you must stay after class and have it date stamped and accepted.
4. If you are present on the day a test/quiz is announced, you are expected to take it if you are in class on the day it is given.
5. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT WHAT HAS BEEN MISSED AND MAKE IT UP ON TIME.

Class Rules and Discipline Policy:
The following are the class rules; they supplement the existing CHS School Rules. Noncompliance with these classroom rules will be reflected in your Classroom Participation grade and subject to the Discipline Policy outlined below.
1. NO Classroom Disruption: Talking irrelevantly and/or out of turn will not be tolerated. Music devices, phones, and gaming devices are also considered disruptions and will be dealt with
2. NO Disrespect: All people in the classroom deserve basic civil respect. Violation of respect will not be tolerated.
3. NO Classroom Absence: Students will not be out of the classroom for longer than 5 minutes. If you are not in the room, you are not learning.
4. NO Non-Spanish Related Materials: Students will engage in 55 minutes of Spanish everyday. It is prohibited to work on other subjects or do other activities.

In order to provide effective instruction, the following discipline policy will be strictly enforced:
1. One verbal warning.
2. Private Friday afternoon detention and parental contact.
3. Disciplinary referral and request conference with parent or guardian.

Fulton County Recovery Policy:

Provision for Improving Grades
1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. The student will have five days from the date of the original grade to make up assignments. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester.

Chattahoochee High School Guidelines:

Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of two (2) major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for a recovery activity is 70%. There will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. THE STUDENT MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF NOTIFICATION OF A FAILING GRADE ON A MAJOR ASSIGNMENT/TEST.
